For its first two generations, the Nissan Leaf EV has taken the shape of a small, dorky-looking hatchback, but an entirely new version has launched for the 2026 model year as a small SUV. A single electric motor drives the front wheels and is available with either 174 or 214 horsepower. Driving range is good, at up to a claimed 303 miles per charge on the S+ trim; other trims, including the loaded Platinum+ model, can't go as far between charges. The Leaf's attractive new styling, intricately designed wheels, and unique lighting elements lend a certain curb appeal, but its sloped roofline compromises cargo space somewhat. All models come well-equipped with infotainment and driver-assistance features, and we expect the base S trim to come in at under $30,000.
